Earlier this year, we made the decision to begin another round of projects to make our 100 year old house a place we can happily live for at least the next five years (Backstory: When I purchased this house as a single gal, my plan was to be here about 5 years. That was 5 years ago!). Quarantine has given us the opportunity to take on so many projects to transform our house into everything our growing family needs.
Next up – a patio revamp!
Our current patio furniture is ill-fit for our deck, which is half elevated wood and half lowered stone. We decided not to tackle a broader build out of the deck just yet (to cover the stone and level the entire thing) – but, we didn’t want to delay everything until we were ready to take on the deck build.
I have this vision of a larger rectangular farmhouse-style table that can accommodate a small dinner party, which we can pair with a matching bench on one side and coordinating chairs on the other. Buying the table I’ve envisioned will cost us upwards of $1,000 but we’re certain we can build our own for a fraction of that.
These were our favorite patio tables available for purchase, for those who want to skip the DIY.
These are the DIY patio tables we’re loving right now, with links to the full tutorials.
1 // X-Leg Table
This X-leg table from Honeybear Lane is one of the simpler options I fell in love with. The construction seems pretty straightforward, and I love the contrasting top and bottom. You could easily mix and match with black iron chairs, like Heidi did, or stain the legs brown and use wicker chairs.
Can you believe this entire table cost less than $90 to build?!?
2 // Herringbone Top Table
Cherished Bliss and Rogue Engineer partnered up to share the plans for this amazing herringbone top table that looks so much more expensive than it really is! The frame appears straightforward to build, and then the patterned top likely takes a bit more (but it’s just detail work).
The detailed plans and step-by-step photos would make this a breeze for anyone with a miter saw.
3 // Trestle Dining Table
No one would ever believe this stunning table is a DIY. The legs just blow me away! The Navage Patch provides one of the most detailed tutorials I’ve ever seen, which would be so helpful in building this. Now if only I could sell the hubs on a table with this many cuts…
4 // Sawhorse Table
Shanty2Chic and Ana White have shared the plans for this sawhorse table that feels both understated and impressive. It was designed based on a table in a Pottery Barn catalogue and only cost $85 to build. They rave about the use of a Kreg Jig for this table and I couldn’t agree more – after using one for the first time on our DIY sand and sensory table, I’ll never build another project without it!
I also love that they’ve paired it with vintage metal chairs, instead of the usual patio look.
5 // Truss Beam Table
This 4×4 truss beam table from Shanty2Chic and Ana White is by far is the sturdiest looking table of the bunch, which we just might need with the severe weather that rolls through Dallas. The table is actually an indoor dining table, but by swapping the wood to cedar or pressure treated deck board, could be repurposed on the patio. Ana White has plans for a less bulky option made of 2×4’s, however I just love the weighted look of the 4×4’s.
Which would you pick, if you were us?
