What is it about 100 degree heat that makes my toddler want to always be outside? We try to get outside early each day to avoid the heat of the afternoon and the heavy mosquitos of the afternoon. Hydration is a priority anytime of day – even 70-80 degrees can be risky for a toddler who isn’t drinking water. Today we’re breaking down 5 summer hydration tips for toddlers.
1 // Keep it accessible
If we ask our toddler, “do you want a drink of water,” she will inevitably respond, “no thank you!” With a Sparkletts water cooler right in our kitchen, it’s easy to fill up her water bottle and take it with us wherever we go. She’s learned how to can even walk over and fill it up on her own (but she has to drink it all before she gets to fill it again!). Of course, access to clean, purified water delivered right to our door twice a month means no excuses for the adults in our house either.
2 // Make it personal
We let our toddler pick out her own fun reusable water bottle which she loves. These Camelback bottles are our favorite – easy to drink from, fun prints for kids to pick from, spill-proof (mom win!) and disassemble easily to wash them. I added her name in corresponding vinyl and now she knows that one is “hers”.
Pro tip: Buy 2 reusable water bottles so you have one to use while the other is in the dishwasher.
3 // Ensure it’s cold
In hot weather, you’re combatting both dehydration and heat exhaustion. We’ve raved numerous times about how much we love our Sparkletts water delivery service because it brings delicious tasting spring or purified water to your house (no excuses!) and the Storm Bottom Load Water Cooler we rent produces cold water on demand. We also use our water machine to fill up these big silicone ice cube trays to drop in our toddler’s water bottle because they melt slower, keeping the water cool longer.
4 // Mix it up
Hydration doesn’t just have to come from plain water. Part of what we love about our Sparkletts water delivery (seriously, it’s one of those things I’ll never get rid of) is that the water is fresh and flavorless – perfect for adding in little “extras” without a weird chlorine taste overwhelming the water. We let our toddler choose her own “mix-ins” to add to her water bottle, like strawberries and a little lemon, to make it extra delicious.
Side note: We also recently discovered this liquid toddler multivitamin we add in to her “fruit water” at night since our toddler refuses to eat even gummy vitamins. Hydration + some extra healthy goodness!
5 // Turn it into a treat
If there’s one thing even our picky toddler will never turn down, it’s a popsicle. We make ours with mostly water and blend in a little juice (usually a 3:1 ratio of water to juice, to cut down the sugar) or pureed fruit – watermelon is so refreshing! They don’t have much sugar in them but E still thinks it’s a treat. I never feel bad about agreeing to give her a second one!
We even gave the baby her first popsicle the other day when she was cutting a tooth (her popsicles were almost all water, with a tiny bit of apple juice). No surprise that she loved them too!
