Big Girl Room Planning

Designing Evie’s “big girl” room has been such a daunting task.  The room is massive – 13’5” (161”) deep and 15’4” (184”) wide.  Even after adding her playhouse (a Christmas gift from her grandparents), the room feels cavernous.

We want a room that can grow with her over the the next five or so years we plan to be in this house, with pieces that will be durable enough to stand up to a rambunctious little girl. And, I still want it to feel fit for a 2 year old. Decisions, decisions!

First step: Establish a clean palette.  The room was painted a light mint green, remnants of a rapid remodel done by the previous owners as they converted it from a rental to a single family.  Repainting in Sherwin William’s Alabaster White let me look at the room with fresh eyes.

The plan is to start with the rug (check out my favorite pink-but-not-too-pink rugs for a little girl’s room here), then add in white furniture with pink accents. If and when she ever outgrows her love of pink, purchasing neutral pieces will enable us to change the look of the room without having to purchase all new furniture.

Our other goal was to keep all of the pieces really affordable. I LOVE this bed from Pottery Barn but it’s so hard for me to justify $1,000 + $200 in delivery fees for a bed in a toddler’s room, where it’s likely to get climbed on and damaged over the years. The $300 daybed options I found seem way more reasonable!
