With my first bikini competition only 10 days away, I’ve been doing a lot of research on what I need to do to get ready for the show – beyond the diet and training that’s been my focus for months. A significant concern is making sure I get the tan right. I’ve learned the hard way during past spray tanning experiences that dry, rough patches of skin absorb color differently than smooth, well hydrated skin, resulting in a patchy look. In this case, more absorption isn’t better, especially if inconsistent. Prepping your skin is key.
I’ve whipped up this delicious lemon drop sugar scrub to help exfoliate those rough patches. Unlike many store-bought scrubs, this one has very little oil (oil can interfere with the application of your tan, too). To make your own, you’ll need:
- 2 cups of white cane sugar
- 2/3 cup of mixed oils. I love a mix of safflower seed oil, sesame seed oil, jojoba seed oil, sunflower seed oil, and olive oil. In a pinch, you can sub this out with a mixture of sweet almond oil and avocado oil. I don’t recommend just olive oil, as it can be a bit greasy.
- 1T of Vitamin E and 1T of Vitamin A essential oils
- 1T of fragrance oil. I buy mine from Bulk Apothecary, which also sells essential oils.
- Optional: A dash of yellow body-safe mika pigment or liquid soap coloration
Mix together and toss in your favorite container or mason jar. Split amongst small 2oz jars (Bulk Apothecary sells those, too) if you’ll be traveling with your scrub.
