Making the Most of our Toddler’s Tiny Closet

Even as we make the move from Evie’s small nursery into her “big girl room”, the one thing we won’t gain is more closet space. The closets for the two rooms are identical and terribly laid out – a single hanging bar and one shelf. Not ideal for someone who is barely over 2′ tall!

As a result, her closet is in a state of disarray. I’m embarrassed to even show it but here goes…

Anyone else living like this? I knew I had to find a small closet organization solution!

We managed to configure Evie’s new closet to be far more functional thanks to some modular storage options from the Container Store.

As a note, this post is not sponsored. I went to the Container Store (pre-quarantine) and purchased each item myself. The links below are affiliate links, though, which means I get a small commission if you purchase through them. This doesn’t increase the cost to you though!

Amy at the Container Store helped me design a custom closet system for Evie from their Elfa Classic line (this pre-packaged set is really similar). We added two hanging rods for clothes and a number of additional shelves to get maximum storage out of her surprisingly tall closet. The system only screws in across the top – everything else is adjustable. As Evie grows, we can adjust the placement of the hanging rods to accommodate her height, without having to change where things screw into the wall or buy anything new!

I was shocked that the entire closet system cost only a few hundred dollars! Elfa has been on sale a lot right now, so watch for a deal or sign up for POP Rewards to save 15% off your purchase.

We then added these pink baskets from Target to help us hide away loose items like shoes and craft supplies (small / medium / large)

Having fallen in love with her new closet, I went online a few days later and also ordered one of the Container Store’s Door Racks. These add an additional bar to your door (no screws required – they just clip over the top) to which you can add baskets for even more storage. I was worried about getting the right fit because our doors upstairs are 100 years old and odd sizes (77.5 inches tall?). Thankfully, the entire Elfa system can be cut to fit. I called and they told me that 75″ would fit with the over the door clips. Done!

We added four large baskets and two medium. If I ever want more baskets, it’s great to know I can just hop over to the store and add on to our small closet organization system – and take it with us when we move (hint, hint, all you renters out there!).

Now I’m on to tackle the next space. Our master closet!
